I would suggest that you look for something related to your interest and passion.
You can look for very popular products that attract many affiliates (high affiliate gravity), but then there are a lot of competitions. Alternatively, you may prefer to find those products with less advertising exposure (lower affiliate gravity).
After you have selected a product, view its pitch (sale) page to decide whether the pitch page is well presented and appealing to visitors.
Next, you will go to Google search engine and type in the product name or keyword. The purpose is to find out the demand for this product. If there are a long list of reviews, adword advertisements and promotion websites, chances are you might make some income too.

Find out how a publisher or merchant uses his affiliate program, if there is one, on his pitch (sale) page. Check out if the publisher displays an affiliate hoplink openly for everyone to view. Some publishers might have done it unintentionally.
Suppose you send customers to the pitch page, when they see there is an affiliate hoplink, they could just use the affiliate hoplink with their own username to purchase the product and earn a rebate. In the end, you earn nothing and bring in traffic for free.
