SEO tactics revealed part 2
I hope you have benefited from the previous SEO article. If you have not read it, you can follow the link at the bottom of this post. For this article, I will write about how Brad Callen optimizes a webpage with keywords.
We shall use the three keywords below as examples.
-
- weight loss story
- weight loss picture
- safe weight loss
To start optimizing our webpage, the first thing we need to do is to choose a proper page Title for our website. When we give a title to our website, we should only include our main keywords. The least amount of words are placed in the title, the more weight Google and other search engine will give to each of the keywords and the higher the webpage will be ranked.
For example, instead of having a title:
-
“Welcome to our website”.
It is better to create this title:
-
“Weight lost story and weight loss picture and safe weight loss”.
In the latter case, all the keywords are included in the title tag.
However, it would perfect if certain unnecessary words are cut down. For instant, we could use:
-
“Weight Loss Story | Safe Weight Loss Picture”.
You can see that the “ands” are being taken out and replaced with “|” character. This “|” key is not the capital i or alphabet l, it is the vertical line on the backslash key.
Next we come to the “h1” header tag in the webpage. The most important keyword should be placed between the “h1” header tag. We could have “Weight Loss Story” in between our “h1” header tag. Similarly, the “h1” header tag should be located as far towards the top of the page as possible. This is due to the way Google perceives a webpage. When Google reads a webpage, it views the text from the top left hand side of the page to the bottom right hand side of the page.
Then we need to create a “h2” header tag. This can be thought of as a sub heading for our webpage. This “h2” header tag preferably should be placed somewhere towards the top half of the webpage. What we should put inside the “h2” header tag is our second most important keyword.
The next step is to write the content for our webpage with at least one of the keywords per 1-2 paragraphs, depending on the length of our page.
When we write our main content, we should go through and bold, italicize and underline keywords. Only do once per keyword as over-doing it can bring negative effect. However, Brad mentioned this is not crucial, so we can just do it to a couple of keywords.
Now we come to the part of adding “alt” image tags. When there are graphics in the webpage, we can add “alt” image tags with our keywords. We just need to include the keyword with an extra word like “graphic”, “picture” or “image”. For example, we would use “weight loss picture graphic” and “safe weight loss image”. This is to ensure Google does not see our work as spamming.
Here is a short information, suggested by Brad, on how to direct Google spider to read our keywords first. In general, Google views our webpage from top left to bottom right. Typically, quite a number of websites have a top, full-horizontal title, one left column, where it has all the navigation links and one right column, where all the content body are. Google will see the left column first and follow the links to other pages, before finally reaching your main content on the right column.
What we want is that Google follow the sequence as shown in the picture below. Google should go through our heading, where the “h1” and “h2” header tags are, then proceed to our main content. After which, it will finish with the navigation link.
One trick that Brad Callen recommended is by modifying the table. Take a look at the picture below.
By doing this, Google will read the top left hand column first. But it will see that it is empty or only contains a few words, so it will then read the main content of our webpage. Follow by the second left hand column which contains the navigational links.
In summary, Brad Callen gives a final note that by doing onpage optimization, it will make small changes in the page rank. That is to say do not expect dramatic jump in ranking. Nevertheless, it is good to perform onpage optimization for our webpage.
